To File Jointly or Not to File Jointly?

Sean:

We all must pay taxes. You were paying them before you got married and you sure have to pay them afterwards.

Before you take the plunge, take a look at how each person will benefit or take an “L” on their taxes. Figure out if you will file jointly or separately (which isn’t really separate). See what you gain and loose from both scenarios. You may come to realize that both parties are in a win/win situation or you may begin to believe in the unconventional wisdom of Angelina and Brad.

Either way, see a professional if both of you have been doing your taxes yourselves. See a real professional if both people have a family member who does taxes on the side. There needs to be an unbiased opinion on this one. The facts may scare you or give no cause for alarm, but it’s better to know ahead then figuring it out when you give yourself or your tax person gives you the big #fail and leave you thinking #wtf.

When the wife makes threats…

Sean:

You need to 100% listen.  I’m not the threat giving kind of guy, but when I do, I usually mean it, so why would I expect anything less from her. Anyway, back to my story.

The wife threatened to shut down this blog, the blog she created, invested time in and it provided her with a sense of…I don’t know. One thing I do know, it’s important to her, so it should be important to me…right? Well, to give more back story, I didn’t write a blog entry for about one or two months (really three or four, but who’s counting). Obviously I was not doing my “part”. Blogging has never a big part of my life. I never wrote, read or participated in one before, henceforth I never gained any special value for it. With that, on my list of priorities, it’s more than likely in the bottom quarter.

Now, this is where I messed up. My wife’s happiness is important to me. I do my best to make her happy and thus, making me happy. I missed the connection that the blogs’ existence makes her happy, and I should do all I can to support it. So with her threat to end something that makes her happy due to my inattentiveness, a red flag went up. I will try to my best to be a blogging mofo for as long as I can. I think I’m up to four in two weeks, which from my track record is pretty fn good. I’ll shot for more, but I hope she spaces them out to make it appear I’m more attentive(I love a good Jedi mind trick from time to time).
